Stopwatch Glossary

Addition - start/stop (as often as necessary) - reset when "game" is over.

Countdown with signal - a preset time counts down after start. Intermediary stops are possible. Once preset time is elapsed, the signal is activated.

CTRS (Certified Traceable Registration Sticker) - stopwatches with a CTRS sticker are traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

ISO-9000 - ISO is a non-governmental organization established in 1947. The mission of ISO is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services, and to developing cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity.

Jewel - ruby within stopwatch; increases accuracy and useful life of mechanical stopwatch through less wear of parts.

Lap - rounds or intervals: after each stop, watch starts immediately from zero.

Lever - stopwatch movement which uses two jewels for increased accuracy and useful life of mechanical stopwatch.

Memory - recorded times can be stored into memory and can be recalled at a later date.

NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) - established by Congress to assist industry in the development of technology, to improve product quality, to modernize manufacturing processes, to ensure product reliability, and to facilitate rapid commercialization of products based on new scientific discoveries.

Pinlever - uses less accurate pins within lever movement instead of jewels.

Split - intermediate time (as often as necessary) total time. After each stop the intermediate time is displayed, the watch continues to run internally.

Start/Stop - reset; single times without interruption.

Register - measurement of total time on stopwatch.

Tempo/Snap-Back/Instant Flyback - when stopwatch is returned to zero it will automatically restart.

Crown Stopper "one button" - the crown stopper represents the most basic system for all simple time measurements without an interruption of the measuring operation.
